The Best Things in Life Are Free

Much as I hate to admit being a bit of a corporate structure, one of the best things about being a gigging musician with his own blog is all the freebies you get. Every week I get albums and singles sent through to my home address in the hope that I’ll love them and pass on my recommendations to you guys. Usually I just keep the ones I like and sell the rest on ebay. Don’t tell my brother, but some of the dance stuff may have found its way into his Christmas present last year. Sorry – but I am a penniless musician remember!

Much better as far as I’m concerned is that I get into a lot of local gigs for free. The managers and staff at all the smaller venues where I live know me well from my own gigs, so I can usually just wander in without paying. That only applies when the band playing is like me; an unknown local act with only friends and family in the audience! I’ve tried to get in free to some of the bigger gigs – bands you might actually have heard of – but no joy yet. Sadly my free entry hasn’t quite been upgraded to free drinks, either, though I am allowed as much cheap nasty beer as I can drink when I’m playing. Doesn’t always lead to the greatest performances, to be honest.

That has always confused me; why do venues encourage artists to drink as much alcohol as possible before going on stage? I’ve seen enough gigs ruined by drunken singers/guitarists/drummers to realise that it isn’t the greatest plan in the world. When I’m playing, I’ll have a couple of sociable beers before my slot, usually with the other singers or bands, and then stick to the juice until I’m on stage. I think the guys who have paid money deserve to see and hear me play sober!
